Action News honors longtime meteorologist Cecily Tynan with retirement celebration

Philadelphia – After delivering her final forecast on Monday, veteran meteorologist Cecily Tynan was escorted to a large celebration in the 6abc newsroom. The event, attended by current and former Action News staff, marked the end of a 31‑year career that has become a fixture in the city’s daily life.

Colleagues remember a dedicated team player

John Morris, President and General Manager of 6abc, highlighted Tynan’s commitment to viewers. “She would stop and talk to everybody who called out her name, ask their name, and pose for photos,” Morris said. “She gave them special moments because she knew how important that was to them.”

Longtime meteorologist Adam Joseph echoed the sentiment, describing Tynan as “the ultimate team player” who helped the newsroom weather both literal storms and the challenges of a fast‑changing industry.

Impact on public safety

Chad Matthews, president of ABC Owned Television Stations, praised Tynan’s role in delivering critical weather information during severe events such as blizzards, tornadoes and hurricanes. “One of the many things I admire about you is your laugh and smile,” Matthews said. “You bring that positivity to Action News and to social media, and it means a lot to us now more than ever.”

Former Action News anchor Jim Gardner noted how Tynan adapted to advances in climate science over her three‑decade tenure. “There has been so much development in climate science,” Gardner said. “She grasped those developments as opportunities and helped people through times of real danger and stress.”

A legacy of mentorship

Veteran meteorologist Dave Roberts, who first hired Tynan, called her “the mother now of all of us.” He added that Tynan’s influence will continue as younger forecasters carry forward the standards she set.

As the celebration concluded, Tynan expressed gratitude for the support of her colleagues and the loyalty of Philadelphia viewers. She looks forward to spending more time with her husband and children, enjoying a well‑earned retirement after a career that has become synonymous with reliable weather reporting for the city.

What this means for the community

Tynan’s retirement marks the end of an era for Action News, but also underscores the importance of local journalism that connects personally with its audience. Her dedication to clear, accurate forecasts and genuine interaction with viewers exemplifies the kind of community‑focused service that strengthens families and neighborhoods.
