Rapid City – AARP South Dakota is hosting two free community events in November to recognize the contributions of family caregivers, veterans, active‑duty service members and military families. Both events are open to all residents, with the first requiring registration and the second welcoming walk‑ins.
Movie screening celebrates caregivers
On Wednesday, Nov. 4, the Elks Theatre will show the uplifting film The Upside at 6:30 p.m. The screening is part of AARP’s effort to highlight the vital role family caregivers play in supporting loved ones and the broader community. Attendees must register in advance through the AARP website at aarp.org/blackhills to secure a seat.
Veterans Day open house provides resources
The second event takes place on Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, from 1 to 3 p.m. at AARP’s information center inside Uptown Rapid. This open house offers refreshments and a chance for veterans, active‑duty service members and military families to learn about available resources, benefits and local support programs. No registration is required, making it easy for anyone to drop by.
Why the events matter
“Family caregivers and veterans give so much to their families and communities, and November gives us an important opportunity to recognize them,” said Erik Gaikowski, AARP South Dakota State Director. By providing both a cultural outing and a resource hub, AARP aims to strengthen community ties and ensure those who serve at home and abroad receive the appreciation and assistance they deserve.
How to participate
Residents interested in the movie screening should visit the AARP Black Hills page to register. For the Veterans Day open house, simply arrive at the Uptown Rapid location during the scheduled hours. Both events are free of charge.
