Aaron Donald returns to Rams after 2½‑year retirement

Los Angeles – The Rams confirmed Sunday that Aaron Donald, the 35‑year‑old defensive lineman who retired in March 2024, is back on the roster for the 2026 season. After two and a half years away from the field, Donald signed a one‑year contract that ESPN says includes at least $20 million in incentives.

Donald’s comeback follows months of intensive workouts at the Rams’ training complex and elsewhere, as he tested his body for the rigors of another NFL campaign. Coach Sean McVay had long hinted that Donald was leaning toward a return, and the decision was finalized during the preseason, just weeks before the team’s season‑opening game in Australia against the 49ers.

Why the return matters

Donald spent his entire first ten seasons with the franchise – first in St. Louis, then in Los Angeles – and established himself as one of the era’s premier interior pass‑rushers. He earned three AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year awards, ten Pro Bowl selections, eight All‑Pro honors and a Super Bowl ring before stepping away abruptly in 2024.

His 111 career sacks remain a Rams franchise record and rank second among interior linemen in NFL history. Donald’s ability to generate pressure from the inside, combined with his run‑stopping prowess, has long forced offenses to double‑team him, opening lanes for teammates.

Teaming up with Myles Garrett

The Rams’ defensive front now features both Donald and Myles Garrett, a rare pairing of two of the league’s most dominant defensive players. Together they have captured five of the past nine AP Defensive Player of the Year honors, including two of the last three for Garrett with the Cleveland Browns.

Additional recent additions – cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson from Kansas City – further bolster a defense that aims to match the high‑powered offense led by MVP Matthew Stafford.

What’s next for Donald

Returning to the field resets Donald’s eligibility clock for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but the veteran says his focus is on helping the Rams chase a second Super Bowl title under McVay. He will line up alongside Garrett and promising young contributors such as Byron Young, Kobie Turner and Braden Fiske, forming a defensive line that opponents will find difficult to attack.

Donald would have been eligible for the 2029 Hall of Fame class, but his decision to play again underscores his desire to add another championship ring to his résumé while still performing at an elite level.
