AABY Foundation offers low‑cost pet vaccinations and microchipping in New Caney

New Caney residents can bring their pets to a free or low‑cost vaccination clinic this June and December at Bull Salas Park, thanks to the AABY Foundation. Founded in 2004 by Kay Pass, the nonprofit originally focused on helping seniors afford veterinary care, but it now serves anyone in need across East Montgomery County.

Why the clinics matter

According to Kerri Larson, the foundation’s medical coordinator, pet vaccination rates in the area have been low, leading to rising cases of distemper and parvo. Many owners cannot afford the full series of shots required for puppies, which includes four separate vaccines before the animal turns one year old.

What the clinic provides

At each event, rabies and Bordetella vaccines are offered for $10‑$12, while all other required shots are provided free of charge. Microchipping, normally $20, is also available, and the foundation hopes to make that service free in the future.

Participants simply bring their animals and cash; volunteers guide them through the process, answer questions, and distribute information about additional low‑cost spay and neuter services offered by partner nonprofits.

Community support and volunteerism

The AABY Foundation relies heavily on volunteers and donations. Lidia Martinez, co‑founder of the animal‑rescue group Alaska’s Hope, says volunteering with the foundation brings her great joy, noting, “You go home and you feel like you accomplished something.” Larson acknowledges that running the clinics can be tiring, but she emphasizes that the reward of helping families care for their pets makes the effort worthwhile.

How to help

Those interested in supporting the foundation can donate money, supplies, or time. The organization welcomes volunteers to assist with clinic setup, animal handling, and outreach. By keeping vaccination costs low and providing education, the AABY Foundation aims to improve pet health and reduce disease spread throughout the community.

Looking ahead

Larson says the foundation continues to explore ways to expand services, including offering free microchipping and increasing awareness about the full vaccine schedule for puppies. The next clinic is scheduled for the first Sunday of June, with another planned for December, both open to the public at Bull Salas Park.
