A Teen Journalist’s Take on the Tallarico Rally Reveals Youth Skepticism of Empty Politics

By OBBM Network Editorial Staff

Zach Rateliff

Do teenagers care about political rallies that sound like rehearsed theater? Natalie Davenport, a 16‑year‑old junior at Texas High School, says she does— and she isn’t impressed.

From Classroom to Campaign Trail

Natalie, who runs the school’s podcast for Texas High School Publications, first learned about the James Tallarico rally from her advisor, Mr. Smith, who encouraged her to cover the event for the school newspaper. “I was aware of what’s going on… I heard about it too,” she recalled, noting that her news feed is saturated with political content. The rally was advertised as a one‑hour speech, but what she experienced felt far longer and far less substantive.

Equipped with an OSMO camera, Natalie recorded the rally, hoping to capture moments that could inform her future reporting. “He talked for exactly 13 minutes,” she said, pointing out that the majority of his time was spent repeating generic statements rather than outlining concrete policies.

Empty Rhetoric Over Real Issues

When asked what she hoped to hear from Tallarico, Natalie was blunt: “I don’t want to hear about my opponent. I want to hear about what you do to serve the people.” She noted that the candidate’s remarks were vague, offering no specific plans on hot‑button issues that matter to her generation, such as abortion and parental rights.

“He said some crazy stuff,” Natalie added, referencing Tallarico’s comments on transgender youth and Planned Parenthood. “I’ll say until I die, especially abortion, you can’t have peace in a country when you’re killing babies.” Her reaction reflects a broader frustration among young conservatives who feel political discourse is increasingly evasive.

The Role of Faith and Values

Faith plays a central role in Natalie’s worldview. She identifies as a “hardcore Christian conservative” and expects candidates to respect religious liberty. “I’m a Christian. Jesus Christ is my savior,” she said, emphasizing that any political message must align with those core beliefs.

She also criticized the rally’s lack of honesty. The candidate’s promise to stay until the end of every rally and answer every question seemed more like a marketing tactic than a genuine commitment to transparency.

Learning Journalism at a Young Age

Beyond the rally, Natalie’s experience underscores the importance of youth participation in media. She plans to transcribe her recordings into a Google Doc for her school’s publication, turning a “excruciating” listening experience into a teachable moment for her peers.

Her advisor’s encouragement to pursue the story highlights a growing trend: high schools are becoming incubators for the next generation of journalists, who bring fresh, unfiltered perspectives to political coverage.

Why This Matters for Future Voters

As Natalie prepares to vote in two years, her reflections serve as a reminder that tomorrow’s electorate is watching closely. She wants candidates to move beyond “lipstick on a pig” rhetoric and present clear, actionable plans. Her candid critique of the Tallarico rally illustrates a desire for authenticity that could reshape how campaigns engage with young voters.

In an era where political messaging often feels scripted, Natalie’s voice is a call for substance over style. If more teens demand accountability, candidates may need to rethink how they communicate, focusing on real policy proposals that resonate with the values and concerns of the next generation.
