A.B. Quintanilla III files $1 million lawsuit against sister Suzette over Selena estate profits

San Antonio – Abraham “A.B.” Quintanilla III, the brother of late Tejano star Selena Quintanilla‑Perez, filed a civil suit on Sept. 10 in Nueces County, Texas, alleging that his sister, Suzette Quintanilla Arriaga, and two corporate entities—Q Production, Inc. and Q Productions, Inc.—have withheld his contractual share of profits from Selena’s entertainment legacy.

Family agreement at the heart of the dispute

The complaint references an “Estate Properties Agreement” signed in the months after Selena’s tragic death in 1995. Under that agreement, A.B. is entitled to 25 % of net profits generated by Selena’s name, voice, image, likeness and other intellectual‑property rights.

Allegations of withheld earnings

According to the petition, Suzette assumed operational control of Q Productions around 2016 following a gradual transition from their father, Abraham Quintanilla Jr. Since that time, A.B. claims he has not received the 25 % share owed to him. He says he discovered the alleged shortfall in the spring of 2025 and subsequently requested a comprehensive accounting report covering all Selena‑related entertainment properties from January 2016 onward.

The lawsuit alleges that the defendants either failed or refused to provide the requested accounting, prompting A.B. to seek legal redress. The complaint lists claims for breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, attorney’s fees and requests a jury trial. The monetary demand exceeds $1 million, reflecting both the alleged unpaid profits and damages.

Legal context and next steps

Family‑estate disputes of this nature are not uncommon, especially when valuable intellectual‑property assets are involved. Texas law requires parties to honor contractual profit‑sharing provisions and to provide transparent accounting when demanded. If the court finds that the defendants withheld the agreed‑upon share, they could be ordered to pay the claimed amount, plus interest and legal costs.

Both parties have been served with the complaint, and a hearing date will be set by the Nueces County district court. Until a judgment is rendered, the claims remain allegations, and the parties are expected to continue negotiations or settlement discussions, as is typical in high‑profile family business matters.

Impact on the local community

The Quintanilla family’s legacy is a point of pride for many in South Texas, where Selena’s music continues to inspire new generations. The lawsuit underscores the importance of clear, enforceable agreements in family‑run enterprises and may prompt other local businesses to review their own contractual arrangements.

Regardless of the outcome, the case highlights the need for transparency and accountability in managing cultural assets that have both emotional and economic significance for the region.
