Samsung and SK Hynix, South Korean chipmaking giants, have become highly sought after by job seekers and matchmaking firms alike. The global AI boom has led to a surge in demand for their memory chip products, resulting in record-high share prices and profits.
Marriage Market
Matchmaking firms in South Korea report that people working at Samsung and SK Hynix are now being ranked alongside doctors, lawyers, and other traditionally elite professions. The companies’ employees are in line for generous bonuses, with some chip employees at Samsung receiving performance bonuses of around $416,000.
The shift in the job market has also led to changes in educational paths, with some students opting for vocational schools to pursue jobs in the semiconductor industry. A student at Pyeongtaek Meister High School, Jung Sung-chan, received a job offer from Samsung Electronics as a chip facility engineer and noted that many of his friends are envious of his opportunity.
Industry Recognition
The semiconductor industry is finally receiving recognition commensurate with its importance to South Korea’s economy, which relies on chips for more than 40% of its exports. Professor Lee Hyung-min of Korea University’s Semiconductor Engineering Department noted that the industry’s boom is expected to continue for at least the next two to three years.
