Florida has introduced new rules for sloth ownership following the deaths of dozens of sloths at the defunct Sloth World attraction in Orlando. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission now requires a special permit to import sloths into the state.
New Regulations
The policy states that facilities housing sloths must meet specific requirements. This change comes after the state enacted a 60-day pause on sloth imports last month. More than 50 sloths died before Sloth World was set to open in Orlando.
State Rep. Anna Eskamani said, “Today’s announcement from FWC represents a small but important victory for animal welfare. By requiring facilities to meet basic standards before they are permitted to bring sloths into Florida, this new policy takes a proactive approach to protecting these animals.”
