Step Into Another World at the Walker Art Center

There are art museums, and then there is the Walker Art Center. Perched on a gentle hill in the Lowry Hill neighborhood, just west of downtown Minneapolis, the Walker is one of those rare cultural institutions that genuinely earns the word “destination.” I’ve walked through its doors more times than I can count, and every single visit leaves me with something I didn’t have before — a new idea, a quiet thrill, or simply the satisfaction of having spent time around things that matter.

Founded in 1879 and reimagined dramatically over the decades, the Walker specializes in contemporary and modern art across virtually every medium: painting, sculpture, film, performance, design, and digital media. The current building — a striking expansion designed by Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron, opened in 2005 — is itself a work of art. The exterior’s perforated aluminum panels shift in appearance depending on the light and season, which feels very much on-brand for a museum that refuses to sit still.

What sets the Walker apart from so many institutions of its size is the fearlessness of its curatorial vision. You won’t find safe, crowd-pleasing retrospectives here. Instead, expect to encounter artists who are actively reshaping how we think about culture — sometimes comfortably, sometimes provocatively, always thoughtfully. Past exhibitions have featured giants like Kara Walker, Olafur Eliasson, and Bruce Nauman alongside emerging voices you’ll want to remember for later. The programming team has an exceptional knack for pairing established reputations with fresh perspectives.

Don’t overlook the permanent collection, which includes over 13,000 works and spans pieces by Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, and Yoko Ono, among many others. Rotating selections mean the galleries feel genuinely different from visit to visit. Plan at least two hours if you want to do it justice — more if you’re the type who reads every label, which is absolutely the right call here because the context the Walker provides is unusually rich and accessible.

Then step outside into the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, which the Walker stewards in partnership with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. Eleven acres of manicured green space filled with iconic works — including Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen’s beloved “Spoonbridge and Cherry” — stretch along the edge of the city, with the downtown skyline as a backdrop. It is one of the largest urban sculpture gardens in the country, it is entirely free to visit, and it is beautiful in every season. In winter, the snow-covered sculptures take on a quiet, almost surreal quality that feels uniquely Minnesotan.

The Walker also hosts an outstanding film series, live performances, lectures, and family programs throughout the year, so there is nearly always a reason to return. The on-site restaurant, Esker Grove, is worth a reservation on its own merits — thoughtful seasonal cooking in an architecturally stunning room.

Whether you are a seasoned contemporary art enthusiast or someone who just wants to spend a meaningful afternoon in a place that feels alive, the Walker Art Center delivers. Come once and you’ll understand why Minneapolis residents consider it one of the city’s true crown jewels.
