Nearly 100,000 people came to Arlington on Monday to witness a historic moment in the World Cup group-stage match between Argentina and Austria.
Argentina Fans Flood Dallas Stadium
Argentina fans, donning sky blue and white-striped jerseys, filled the streets around Dallas Stadium, cheering and waving flags.
Lionel Messi scored in the 38th minute and again in the 95th, giving him 18 all-time goals in soccer’s biggest stage and breaking the men’s World Cup scoring record.
Julieta Lueseas, who traveled from Connecticut, said, ‘I don’t know how to explain it. … I feel so emotional right now. Experiencing this with my family, I just can’t explain it. I’m so happy.’
Other fans, like Carlos Claros, came from as far as Houston, hoping to find last-minute tickets and be a part of the celebration.
Not everyone was there to support Argentina, however. Martin Huber and Alex Meier traveled from Vienna to cheer on Austria, saying, ‘It doesn’t matter if there are more Argentinians or not. It’s cool to be here.’
