On July 8, 2026, former Missouri Gov. Jeremiah “Jay” Nixon will follow in his ancestor Col. John Nixon’s footsteps by reciting the Declaration of Independence in the Rotunda of the Greene County Historic Courthouse in Springfield, Missouri.
Event Details
The event will begin at 2 p.m. and will be attended by many state and local officials. It will be cohosted by the Greene County Democratic and Republican Women’s Clubs as a continuation of the county’s celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.
In addition to the reading by Gov. Nixon, another reading of the Declaration of Independence will take place at 5 p.m. in the Springfield National Cemetery, providing an authentic experience with no follow-up dignitaries speaking.
