The Rainbow River in Dunnellon, Florida, was reopened after a snorkeler was bitten by an alligator, according to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. During the closure, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and deputies from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office were able to locate the alligator and remove it from the area.
Safety Tips
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission offers the following tips for safely co-existing with alligators: keep a safe distance if you see an alligator and never feed one, swim only in designated swimming areas during daylight hours, keep pets on a leash and away from the water’s edge, and call the FWC’s Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR if you believe an alligator poses a threat to people, pets, or property.
