Lubbock Mayor Mark McBrayer is organizing a public meeting to discuss the issue of data centers in the city. The meeting, scheduled for July 7, aims to address concerns about water use, power consumption, location, and noise pollution.
Data Centers in Lubbock
Several data centers are considering Lubbock as a potential location, and the mayor wants to get ahead of the issue by hearing from the public. The meeting will be held at the Lubbock Civic Center, with an estimated 1,000 people expected to attend.
McBrayer emphasized that the city has not made any agreements with prospective data center developers and wants to ensure that any decisions made are in the best interest of the citizens and taxpayers. The meeting will include a City Council discussion on the conditions that would need to be met for data centers to be established in the city.
Former mayoral candidate Stephen Sanders has also been vocal about his concerns regarding data centers, including water consumption and local power consumption. Sanders started a petition in early June to force the city to consider an 18-month moratorium on data center projects or put the question to local voters.
