El Paso County Jail Annex inmate dies after medical emergency, sheriff says

An inmate at the El Paso County Jail Annex has died after a reported medical emergency, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office says. The news emerged from El Paso, Texas, where jail staff and the sheriff’s office are handling the response and notifying next of kin while an internal review gets underway.

Officials say the incident began when staff discovered an inmate in apparent distress inside the jail annex. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the inmate suffered a medical emergency and later died, but officials have released only limited details so far as they work through required procedures.

The sheriff’s office is following normal protocols after an in-custody death, which typically include notifying relatives, securing the scene, and arranging for a medical examiner to determine the cause of death. Those steps are intended to preserve evidence and provide clarity, while also meeting legal and administrative obligations to family members and the public.

At this stage, the office has not released the inmate’s name or medical history, citing the need to notify loved ones and to protect privacy during an active review. That lack of identification is standard in many jurisdictions until next of kin have been informed and the medical examiner can confirm identity and cause.

Staff at the jail annex are cooperating with investigators and documenting what happened before, during, and after the medical emergency. Surveillance footage, booking records, inmate medical logs, and staff statements are all likely to be part of the review, which can help answer questions about timing, response and whether protocols were followed.

Family members understandably want answers, and the sheriff’s office says it will provide updates as information becomes available and as privacy rules allow. Community advocates and legal observers often watch in-custody deaths closely, pressing for transparency and timely release of findings from medical examiners and internal reviews.

The El Paso County Jail Annex serves as part of the county’s detention system, and in-custody deaths there draw renewed attention to medical care and supervision inside detention facilities. Officials will likely be asked whether medical staff had access to the facility, what emergency supplies were on hand, and how quickly medical personnel responded when the emergency was detected.

For now, the scene remains under review and the sheriff’s office is coordinating with the county medical examiner to establish a cause of death. The community can expect follow-up statements from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office once investigators and medical personnel complete their initial work and family notifications are complete.
