Fort Worth ISD is holding a series of listening sessions to rebuild trust with the community after the district’s takeover by the state. The sessions, which will continue through August, aim to shape the district’s goals and priorities for the 2027-28 budget.
Parental Concerns
Parents, including Marisol Herrera and Dionna Deardorff, have expressed concerns about the district’s ability to listen to their needs. Herrera, a leader in a districtwide PTA group and parent advocacy organization, emphasized that listening is not enough and that action is needed.
Deardorff urged the district to partner with community groups, including Families Organized and Resisting Takeover (FORT), to ensure that all voices are heard. AJ Crabill, a school governance training coach, stressed the importance of listening to the community’s vision and values.
Opportunity for Change
Taylor Duncan, president of the Daggett Elementary PTA, sees this as an opportunity for the district to build trust with parents and the community. The listening sessions will be hosted by community groups and organizations, and Superintendent Peter Licata will also hold his own sessions.
