A diplomatic rift has intensified between US President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni over an alleged photo request at the G7 summit in France. Trump claims Meloni begged for the picture, which Meloni calls “completely made up.”
Diplomatic Fallout
The dispute, compounding earlier friction over Trump’s criticism of Pope Leo XIV, has led Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani to cancel an upcoming trip to the United States.
Expressing her frustration with the situation, the Italian Prime Minister added: “I don’t know why the president of the United States behaves like this towards his allies.”
Rather than de-escalating, Trump reiterated his stance in a follow-up statement. He maintained that Meloni was “a big fan” of his, but drew a line regarding their political differences.
“I don’t want her as a fan,” Trump said, pointing specifically to her administration’s current approach to the conflict over the Strait of Hormuz.
The verbal dispute has quickly translated into official diplomatic fallout. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stepped in to condemn the American president’s rhetoric, calling Trump’s remarks “serious and offensive.” As a direct result of the exchange, Tajani canceled his scheduled upcoming trip to the United States.
