Federal law enforcement agents have arrested Sash Tharan Balasinkam in New York following a joint investigation into explicit, violent threats against Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Investigation Details
Authorities say the suspect detailed plans on social media and phone lines to buy firearms across state lines and travel directly to the lawmakers’ homes. The investigation began with the U.S. Capitol Police after Balasinkam allegedly made repeated, highly specific threats to assault and murder the two public officials.
The U.S. Capitol Police Special Agents requested cooperation from the U.S. Marshals Service in the Southern District of New York to help execute an arrest. The two agencies partnered closely to track Balasinkam down.
The joint effort allowed law enforcement to swiftly locate and apprehend Balasinkam in New York without incident. The case is currently being prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.
