Lanesville residents are looking to state financial assistance following recent floods and insurance denials. On Friday, Gov. Mike Braun signed an emergency disaster declaration for 63 counties across Indiana, including Jefferson, Jackson, Jennings, Lawrence and Harrison.
Community Impact
Those in Lanesville and other communities impacted by severe flooding are looking forward to getting help toward rebuilding. For many in the small community, the days since floodwater washed out roads and buildings have been spent cleaning up and paying up.
Homeowner Colten Popp, who watched feet of rain fill his home, has been ripping out water-damaged walls and floors. Popp said restoring his home has been overwhelming. Many homeowners say their insurance claims have been denied, leaving them to pay thousands out of pocket. Popp said he’s going to end up paying at least $20,000.
Lanesville resident Brian McIntyre says government assistance is critical for the community. “It’s desperately needed,” McIntyre said. “There’s many people that have been uprooted out of their homes and have had to either move out or live on basic needs.”
Highway department crews have also been out repairing bridges damaged by rushing water. Some businesses that have been closed for days are starting to reopen, like Lanesville Food Mart.
