The city of Johnston is revising its animal control ordinance to address a growing coyote population. The city council heard the first consideration of an overhaul to the ordinance, which would allow certified operators with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to trap and humanely euthanize animals classified as nuisance wildlife.

Coyote Management Plan

Last fall, Johnston adopted a coyote management plan to help deter coyotes that appear too comfortable around humans. “We know that the problem’s just going to get worse in our area, that the population continues to grow, so with this we have to provide opportunity to be able to allow the nuisance wildlife control operators to trap within the city,” said Johnston police Chief Dennis McDaniel.
