Shively Crash Kills 13-Year-Old Girl

A witness to the aftermath of a deadly crash on Dixie Highway in Shively says the traumatic scene is something he will never forget. Three teenage girls were hit by a vehicle Saturday afternoon in the 3900 block of Dixie Highway.

Muna Sheiku, 13, was killed. Two other teenage girls were taken to the hospital and are recovering. The crash happened around 4:30 p.m. near the Shively-Newman Library.

Witness Recounts Traumatic Scene

Terrell Simmons said he was sitting at a nearby bus stop when he heard the collision. “I just hear a huge boom,” Simmons said. Moments later, he realized three girls had been struck. “It’s hard to speak about, but I seen them get ran over,” Simmons said.

Simmons recorded video shortly after the crash. He says one of the girls was thrown several feet by the impact. “One of the girls got hit and flew about 50 feet. It was a very traumatic sight. It’s a tragedy,” Simmons said.

Police say Sheiku died at the scene. The two other teens were transported to the hospital with injuries and continue to recover. The incident has left a lasting impact on Simmons. “I’m still dealing with trauma myself, to be honest,” he said.

As investigators work to determine what led to the crash, Simmons believes more safety measures are needed along Dixie Highway. “I believe they need to treat this highway just like they would any other highway and put guardrails along the sides of it,” Simmons said. He also pointed to a lack of pedestrian infrastructure in some areas. “A majority of the highway doesn’t even have sidewalks. People literally have to walk in the street just to get where they’re going,” he said.

His message to drivers is simple: stay alert. “Be more alert, be more aware, put down distractions and drive more carefully, especially when driving down this particular street,” Simmons said. He hopes sharing his experience will help prevent future tragedies. “Truly bring awareness to the situation so that we can prevent it from happening in the future,” Simmons said.

Police have not released the name of the driver involved or said whether charges will be filed. The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information is encouraged to contact Shively police.
