NM Authors Honored

New Mexico authors Philip Connors and Caroline Starr Rose have been named 2026 New Mexico Great Reads honorees for their books inspired by the state’s fire lookout tradition and the complex role fire plays in the landscape.

Fire Lookout Tradition

Connors’ book, ‘The Mountain Knows the Mountain,’ draws from his time as a fire lookout in the Gila National Forest during the 2023 fire season. Rose’s novel, ‘A Burning Season,’ was partly inspired by Connors’ earlier work and follows a 12-year-old girl being raised in a family of fire lookouts in the Gila Wilderness.

The recognition highlights the authors’ exploration of fire as a natural and necessary force, as well as its destructive power. Rose hopes readers will gain a deeper understanding of New Mexico and wildfire, while Connors reflects on the changing landscape shaped by weather, light, and wildfire.

Connected Perspectives

Both books offer poetic perspectives on the experience of watching over fire-prone landscapes. Connors and Rose believe their works are connected, examining remote lookout life and New Mexico’s relationship with wildfire. The 2026 New Mexico Great Reads honor will help represent the state on a national stage, showcasing its literary voices and enduring connection to fire, forests, and the people who watch over them.
