The city of Albuquerque could send a tax increase proposal to voters in November if city councilors pass an ordinance on Monday. The ordinance (O-26-42) would ask voters to decide on a 0.4875% tax increase. If approved, the tax would raise the city’s sales tax rate from 7.625% to 8.113% to generate roughly $113 million annually for city worker pay and community projects.

Council President Klarissa Peña and Councilor Brook Bassan are sponsoring the bill. Councilors rejected the proposal back in March. Since then, the plan has been updated to allow voters to make the final decision. If the city council passes it, the bill would show up on the November general election ballot.
