I-64, I-71 Interchange Road Work

Drivers heading into downtown Louisville early this week should expect possible delays near the I-64 and I-71 interchange as crews install new solar-powered lighting in the area.

The work is not related to the ongoing I-65 shutdown, but it could impact traffic. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said crews will be working to install new lighting around the interchange on Monday and Tuesday.

The goal of the upgrade is to improve visibility and reduce copper wire theft in the area. Since 2020, thefts of highway lighting have resulted in nearly $1.5 million in damages and left many roads inoperable, according to KYTC.

During the work, the ramp from I-71 South to I-64 West will be narrowed. Once drivers are on I-64 West, the right merge lane and shoulder will be closed from the ramp merge area to the Kennedy Bridge.

Work is scheduled to take place each day starting at 9 a.m. and ending at 11 p.m. Drivers are urged to slow down in the area as crews complete their work and allow for extra travel time to make up for any possible delays.
