Northeast Leads Ice Cream Searches

New Jersey has been found to be the most ice cream-obsessed state in the country, according to a recent analysis of Google search trends. The study, conducted by Innerbody Research, looked at search data from all 50 states and Washington, D.C. between April 2025 and April 2026.

Northeast Dominance

The Northeast region dominated the top five spots, with Delaware, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York following closely behind New Jersey. Seven of the top 10 states with the highest ice cream search interest were located on the East Coast, with New Hampshire and Maine also making the list.

The top five states with the lowest ice cream search interest were Arkansas, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. When it comes to specific flavors, strawberry was the most searched-for flavor nationwide, followed by chocolate chip and cookie dough.

Regional Preferences

According to Steve Christensen, executive director of the North American Ice Cream Association, the Northeast region’s high concentration of ice cream shops per capita may contribute to its strong search interest. Vermont has the highest concentration of ice cream shops, with 18.51 shops per 100,000 residents.

Christensen also noted that the Midwest, which did not feature highly in the study, has a strong affinity for rich flavors like butter pecan and black walnut. In contrast, the Northeast tends to prefer cleaner flavors like mint, while the West Coast is more open to new and emerging flavors like matcha and ube.

The average American consumes around 18 pounds of ice cream per year, according to the International Dairy Foods Association. With the rise of health consciousness, many consumers are opting for ice cream made with less-processed and more natural sweeteners.
