The Georgetown Police Department is hosting a free Jr. Citizens Police Academy for local teens this summer. The four-day camp, which takes place from July 13 to July 16, aims to give kids a behind-the-scenes look at law enforcement and help them feel more comfortable around police.
Program Details
The program is intended for children ages 13 to 17 years old and will include lessons on traffic stops, investigations, and K9 demonstrations. Lunch will be provided for participants, and spots are limited. Interested participants can request an application by emailing Ryan Hill at [email protected].
According to Lt. Aaron Wilson with the Georgetown Police Department, the goal of the Jr. Citizens Police Academy is to help kids build relationships with police officers and feel more at ease when interacting with them. "It gives kids a cop they can know personally. So it takes away some of the fear of talking to someone in uniform when they say, ‘Hey, I know that officer,’ and they can go and talk to him," Wilson said.
