Romanian President Nominates New Prime Minister

Romania’s centrist President Nicusor Dan nominated Adrian Vestea, a member of the liberal party, as prime minister on Sunday. This move came after independent candidate Eugen Tomac withdrew his candidacy due to lack of support from parliamentary parties.

Vestea, 52, is the county council president of the central Romanian county of Brasov. He will have 10 days to form a government and win a parliamentary vote of confidence. The nomination aims to end a political crisis that has stalled policymaking and endangered access to EU funds.

Political Crisis in Romania

The political crisis in Romania has been ongoing, with the leu currency reaching record lows. The opposition far-right leads opinion surveys, significantly ahead of pro-European parties. Romania’s next parliamentary election is not due until 2028, and analysts say the likelihood of an early election is small.
