A 21-year-old motorcyclist was killed Saturday night in a chase and crash in Johnston County. According to the State Highway Patrol, around 11:55 p.m. a deputy tried to stop a speeding motorcycle that ran a red light on Clayton Boulevard (U.S. 70 Business) in Clayton.
The motorcyclist, identified as John Cutler Murray, 21, of Archers Lodge, did not stop, and a chase began. The motorcyclist crashed at the intersection of Powhatan Road and Harrison Road when he took a curve too quickly, crossed the centerline, and ran off the road. He was thrown off the motorcycle and hit a telephone pole and small tree on Harrison Road.
The SHP said the deputy only saw the moments after the crash, including the dust cloud, and pulled over to provide first aid until EMS arrived. Alcohol and speed are considered contributing factors in the crash, the SHP said. The crash is under investigation.
