G7 Summit Sparks Protests

As the G7 summit approaches, protests have begun in Geneva, with shops and businesses boarding up their storefronts in anticipation of potential unrest. The summit, which will be attended by U.S. President Donald Trump and other leaders, is set to discuss issues such as the Middle East, Ukraine, and global economic imbalances.

Security Measures

French and Swiss authorities have imposed extensive security measures, including the deployment of 4,000 army personnel to support police during the summit. Operations will include airspace and road restrictions, as well as patrols on Lake Geneva. Additionally, France will deploy over 13,000 police and gendarmerie officers to ensure security in the summit area.

Protesters, including environmentalists, feminists, and foes of capitalism, have called for a big demonstration on Sunday. A flotilla of around 20 boats appeared on Lake Geneva, displaying anti-G7 and pro-Palestinian banners. Some 20 protesters were detained on Friday evening, according to Swiss media reports.

Concerns and Fears

Local residents and business owners are worried about the potential for violent protests, citing the 2003 G8 summit in Geneva, which saw storefronts smashed. The Swiss government has taken steps to prevent a repeat of such incidents, but concerns remain.

Protesters are demonstrating against the policies of President Trump and other G7 leaders, including their stance on issues such as tariffs, the war in Iran, and climate change. The NoG7 coalition, which has organized the demonstration and march on Sunday, has expressed fears about the impact of these policies on the planet.
