A Kennedy Center official confirmed that all references to President Donald Trump have been removed from the center, following a federal judge’s order. The removal includes the facade of the building and the center’s website.
Background
The controversy began when a board handpicked by President Trump voted to add his name to the center in December. However, a federal judge ruled that the center’s board did not have the authority to unilaterally rename the building, stating that ‘Congress gave the Kennedy Center its name, and only Congress can change it.’
The judge’s ruling also blocked a planned two-year closure of the center for renovations, calling the plans ‘ill-informed and seemingly preordained.’ The center had argued that removing Trump’s name would result in the loss of hundreds of millions of dollars in funding, but the judge denied this claim.
Democratic Rep. Joyce Beatty of Ohio, who filed the suit, called the removal of Trump’s name a ‘victory,’ saying that it marked the beginning of returning the Kennedy Center to the American people.
