Motorbike Riders Rescue Unconscious Driver, Toddler

A group of motorbike riders in Brooklyn came to the rescue of a couple who lost consciousness while driving with a toddler in the back seat. The vehicle began veering slowly into oncoming traffic when the dozen or so bikers took notice and checked on the driver.

One of the bikers, who posted a video of the incident on social media, said they automatically turned around to see what was going on and got to the car to find the adults unresponsive and a child in the back seat. The bikers checked the pulses of the unresponsive male driver and female passenger and attempted to wake the driver by rubbing his chest and pouring a beverage on his face.

Rescue Efforts

The bikers removed the toddler from the vehicle and asked a woman standing nearby to look after her. The driver, 34-year-old Joseph Santanelli, became combative at the scene after he regained consciousness and faces five charges, including aggravated DWI and acting in a manner injurious to a child less than 17.

The biker who posted the video said it took approximately eight or nine minutes for first responders to arrive. He called it a traumatic and overwhelming situation, adding that the riders did whatever they could to help. The mother of the toddler, who was not in the vehicle, thanked the bikers on social media for their actions.

The incident has shed a new light on bike riders, with the biker who posted the video saying he hopes it shows that they are willing to help those in need. The local councilwoman, Darlene Mealy, supplied the bike riders with Narcan, a nasal spray that rapidly reverses an opioid overdose, and an event is being held to train the riders on how to properly use the medication in an emergency situation.
