A Houston-area man, Anthony Morales, received a condolence letter from the Social Security Administration informing him of his own death. The error stopped his disability checks and left him with a negative account balance, putting him two months behind on basic expenses.
Struggle to Restore Benefits
Morales said he made four trips to a Social Security office to demonstrate that he was still alive. On the fourth visit, he was asked to write on a document, “I’m still alive.” After a news outlet contacted the Social Security Administration on his behalf, Morales said he was told his case is being expedited and that his payments could resume within three to seven business days.
According to Morales, the ordeal has caused significant financial strain. “I can’t afford rent. I can’t afford groceries. I can’t afford maintenance on my wheelchair,” he said.
