New Courthouse Design Reflects Trump’s Architectural Legacy

A new courthouse in Chattanooga, Tennessee, is set to open in 2030, featuring a muscular Art Deco Greek temple design. This state building symbolizes the US president’s future architectural legacy, as it is the first major new design announced by America’s federal building agency since Trump’s executive order, ‘Making Federal Architecture Beautiful Again.’ The design, dubbed ‘Greco-Deco,’ has been lauded by the National Civic Art Society (NCAS) as a ‘showpiece’ of Trump’s executive order.

Design and Debate

The design features a row of square columns bookended by two bulky, mausoleum-like volumes, which some critics argue is not transparent and may be intimidating. Professor Kevin D. Murphy of Vanderbilt University disputed the architects’ claim that the building symbolizes transparency, saying it is ‘very formidable and very solid, in a very conventional way.’ Christopher Hawthorne, a former Los Angeles Times architecture critic, considers the design ‘handsome’ but questions its ability to reflect contemporary society.

Trump’s executive order has been met with opposition from the American Institute of Architects, who argue that it limits their ‘freedom to create buildings that truly serve modern communities.’ The order applies to major federal buildings, but its impact may be limited, and the definition of ‘beauty’ and ‘dignity’ may be subjective.

Public Opinion and Architectural Style

A Harris Poll found that over 70% of Americans prefer traditional over modern designs for courthouses and federal office buildings. However, the architecture profession has been critical of Trump’s reverence for traditional design, arguing that it may lead to pastiche and derivative mimicry while stifling innovation.
