Arizona Men’s Tennis Team Makes History

The Arizona Wildcats men’s tennis team has undergone a significant transformation under the guidance of coach Clancy Shields. Shields, who was hired in 2016, brought a new level of competitiveness to the program, which had previously struggled in conference play.

Turnaround and Success

After a rough start, which included two winless seasons in Pac-12 play, the team began to show signs of improvement. In 2019, they made their first NCAA tournament appearance, marking the beginning of a new era for the program. The team’s success continued, with four Sweet Sixteen appearances in the last five seasons.

This season, the Wildcats faced strong opponents, including Oklahoma, LSU, and San Diego, but they countered with wins against Florida State and Pepperdine. They then went on to win 15 straight matches, securing the program’s first Big 12 regular season championship.

Big 12 Tournament and NCAA Championship

In the Big 12 tournament, Arizona defeated UCF in the first round and advanced to play TCU in the championship, where they ultimately fell to the Horned Frogs. The team then turned their attention to the NCAA tournament, where they hosted the first three rounds. They defeated NAU and Clemson, advancing to the Sweet Sixteen for the fourth straight season.

In the Sweet Sixteen, Arizona faced Oklahoma, a team they had lost to earlier in the season. The Wildcats were able to overcome the loss in doubles play and won four out of six singles matches, with senior Jay Friend securing the deciding match. This victory marked the program’s first Elite Eight appearance.

Although the season ended with a loss to Wake Forest, the Wildcats’ performance was a testament to their growth and dedication. With almost all of the roster returning, the team is poised for another deep run in the NCAA tournament.
