The Town Green District and Trinity Bar have set up a “World Cup Village” in Pitkin Plaza, where they will screen World Cup games for the next month. The event kicked off on Thursday with the first game of the tournament, featuring Mexico and South Africa.
Local Fans Show Their Support
Hector Chaidez, a Mexico fan, was in attendance, wearing a green Mexico jersey and cheering on his team. Chaidez, who is originally from Mexico, said that soccer is a big part of his culture and that this event is very special to him.
Other fans, such as cousins Victor Tepi and Javier Hernandez, drove from Waterbury to watch the game on the large screen set up in Pitkin Plaza. They are optimistic about Mexico’s chances in the tournament, despite the team not being favored to advance very far.
The event will continue until the World Cup final on July 19, with games being screened outside in Pitkin Plaza and at Trinity Bar. Nearby restaurants are offering take-out discounts to fans attending the event.
