Boston Stadium Prepares for World Cup

Boston Stadium, home of the New England Patriots, is being transformed to host World Cup matches. FIFA World Cup 2026 is operating the stadium during the tournament, with Kevin Clark as the FIFA Venue Operations Director for the Boston site.

Preparations Underway

Signs at the stadium are being covered, and the turf has been replaced with grass, a cold-season-type mix of bluegrass and ryegrass. The field, now referred to as “the pitch,” is being carefully managed to meet World Cup standards, with the grass at 23 millimeters.

The stadium itself has seen cosmetic changes, including rebranded locker rooms and larger media staging areas for post-match interviews. Outside the stadium, some parking lots have been converted into broadcasting compounds and dressing and signage storage areas. FIFA has also added sensory rooms for fans who may be overwhelmed by the large crowds and cheering.

After the opening match on Saturday, the focus will shift to repairing the field before the next match. A vacuum system has been installed to clear water off the pitch in case of rain during a match.
