San Antonio to Replace Alamodome Scoreboard

The city of San Antonio is set to replace the Alamodome’s scoreboard, which is only six years old, due to excessive wear and tear. The current scoreboard has been dismantled and moved multiple times, resulting in a lack of replacement parts and repair services.

New Scoreboard Details

The city will spend $2.3 million on a new modern LED video scoreboard and display control system from OES-USA, Inc. The new scoreboard is expected to be ready before the NCAA Woman’s Final Four Volleyball Championship in December. The purchase will include two new center-hung scoreboards, one for the stadium setup and one for the arena setup, both of which are expected to last at least a decade.

The current scoreboard is 18 feet by 33 feet, while the new scoreboard for the stadium setup will be 18 feet by 39 feet, and the new scoreboard for the arena setup will be 15 feet by 33 feet. The funding for the new scoreboard will come from the Alamodome Improvement and Contingency Fund.

Alamodome Renovations

The Alamodome has undergone significant renovations in recent years, including a $60 million renovation in preparation for the 2018 NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four and a $29 million facelift before hosting the event again in 2025. However, the city has pushed back the timeline for major renovations, with the next big renovation planned for around 2035.

In the meantime, the city will focus on smaller-scale investments in the dome, such as the new scoreboard, to enhance the attendee experience and provide a financial return. The city is also reviewing the costs of operating and maintaining the Alamodome over the next 10 years and will bring recommendations to the City Council this fall.
