A district judge has ruled to transfer ownership of the old UnityPoint hospital in Marshalltown to the city after determining the property was unsafe and in disrepair. The hospital building has been vacant since 2022. The judge described the property as a “haven for criminal activity.”

The manager of CD Marshalltown LLC, the property’s owner, appeared in court without legal representation. Under Iowa law, corporations must be represented by a licensed attorney. The judge denied the company’s informal request for a new trial.

Marshalltown City Administrator Carol Webb told KCCI, “The city is looking forward to addressing the conditions of the property.” KCCI reached out to CD Marshalltown LLC and is waiting to hear back.
