Trump Order May Halt Mail Ballots

The Trump administration has proposed new rules that could halt mail ballot delivery for states that don’t provide voter lists to the federal government. This move is part of an executive order signed by President Trump to crack down on mail-in voting.

States Push Back

Twenty-three Democratic-led states and the District of Columbia are suing the administration, arguing that the order is unconstitutional and would disenfranchise voters. Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows said that if the courts rule in favor of the Trump administration, it would lead to a virtual elimination of mail-in voting.

The proposed rules require states to provide the Postal Service with lists of voters who will receive mail ballots. The Postal Service would then use these lists to verify the eligibility of voters and deliver ballots accordingly. However, critics argue that this would give the federal government an unprecedented role in elections and could lead to voter suppression.

Constitutional Concerns

The order has raised concerns about the constitutionality of the administration’s actions. The Constitution gives states the power to run elections, and many argue that the federal government is overstepping its authority. Tobias Read, secretary of state in Oregon, said that the order is not within the president’s power and would deny eligible people the right to vote.

The Trump administration has argued that the order is necessary to ensure the integrity of elections and prevent voter fraud. However, many experts argue that voter fraud is rare and that the order is an attempt to restrict voting rights.

Implementation Challenges

The proposed rules pose significant challenges for states, particularly smaller ones with limited budgets. The Postal Service would need to design and launch a portal for states to submit voter lists, which could be a costly and time-consuming process. Additionally, the rules would require states to revamp their mail-in ballot systems, which could be difficult to implement in time for the midterm elections.
