Massachusetts Family Loses Home to Fire Hours Before Baby’s Birth

A devastating fire tore through a family’s home in Winthrop, Massachusetts, on Sunday, destroying the house and an adjacent home. The fire occurred just hours before the family was set to welcome a new addition – a baby girl.

A Miracle Amidst the Ashes

Chiara Keenan, the expectant mother, was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital, where she gave birth to a healthy baby girl, Giannina Grace Keenan, at 9:25 a.m. Monday. Despite the chaos and destruction caused by the fire, both mother and baby are doing well and recovering.

The family had been preparing for months to welcome their first grandchild, and the nursery was ready for the new arrival. However, the fire destroyed the home, leaving the family to pick up the pieces and start anew.

Neighbors described the fire as spreading quickly, with one witness, Joanne Avellino-Bakacs, saying she saw the flames engulf the house after they started in a car in the driveway. The Winthrop fire chief, Stephen Calandra, explained that electric vehicle fires can be particularly challenging to extinguish, requiring large amounts of water to put out.

The fire also affected another family, the Fiaus, who lived next door and lost their home in the blaze. Lavinia Fiau, 15, expressed her fear and nervousness about the situation, not just for herself but also for her family and the community.

Fire crews from nearby communities, including Revere and Chelsea, assisted in putting out the flames. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
