The Zach Johnson Classic, a cherished annual charity golf tournament in Cedar Rapids, has postponed its opening due to inclement weather. Originally scheduled to open at 7:45 a.m., the Elmcrest Country Club will now welcome the general public, club members, and sponsors at 11 a.m. on Monday.
This event is more than just a golf tournament; it is a significant fundraiser for ‘Kids on Course,’ a program dedicated to supporting students in Cedar Rapids schools through tutoring, activities, and scholarships. Last year, the tournament successfully raised over a million dollars for this noble cause. Admission to the event is free, although donations are greatly appreciated to further support the initiative.
Zach Johnson to Compete in Principal Charity Classic
Later this week, Zach Johnson, a Cedar Rapids native and Drake University alumnus, will participate in the Principal Charity Classic in Des Moines. This tournament, held from June 12-14 at the Wakonda Club, is part of the PGA Tour Champions and is open to former PGA Tour winners aged 50 and older. Johnson, who turned 50 in February, is eligible to compete for the first time.
Johnson’s illustrious career includes 12 PGA Tour victories, highlighted by his triumphs at the 2007 Masters and the 2015 Open Championship at St. Andrews. His leadership was also recognized when he served as the captain for Team USA in the 2023 Ryder Cup.
