Tim Cook’s Final Major Move as Apple CEO: AI Strategy Unveiled

As Tim Cook prepares to step down as Apple’s CEO, he is expected to make a significant announcement regarding the company’s artificial intelligence strategy. At the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple plans to unveil a new version of Siri, potentially aligning it with the capabilities of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.

Apple’s AI Journey

Apple has faced challenges in the AI sector, with delays in Siri’s overhaul and its current AI tools, known as Apple Intelligence, not standing out in the competitive market. The new Siri is anticipated to handle multiple tasks with a single command and may feature a chatbot-style interface, according to Bloomberg.

Apple’s partnership with Google on the models powering the new Siri could enhance its performance significantly. Anurag Rana, a senior equity analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence, noted the success of the Gemini models, which are expected to boost Siri’s capabilities.

Implications for Apple’s Future

Investors have been eager to understand Apple’s AI strategy, especially as iPhone sales remain strong. The upcoming changes will soon be managed by John Ternus, who will take over as CEO in September. Tim Cook will transition to the role of executive chairman of the board.

With over 2.5 billion Apple devices in use globally, Apple has a substantial market share that could provide an advantage in the AI race. However, more than half of the iPhones worldwide do not support Apple Intelligence, as this technology is only available on the iPhone 15 Pro and later models.

Gene Munster, cofounder of Deepwater Asset Management, expressed confidence in Apple’s ability to succeed, stating, “They’ve got too much at stake to drop the ball.” The upcoming announcements could mark a pivotal moment for Apple as it seeks to solidify its position in the AI landscape.
