In a concerning incident at New York’s Penn Station, five people were stabbed on Sunday evening. The New York City Fire Department received reports of the attack around 7 p.m. at the station’s entrance on West 33rd Street and 7th Avenue. Law enforcement officials confirmed that the suspect is now in custody.

According to the fire department, one individual sustained serious injuries, while four others suffered moderate to minor injuries. Fortunately, none of the injuries are life-threatening, and all victims were transported to Bellevue Hospital for treatment.

The suspect involved in the attack is believed to be unhoused, as per information from law enforcement sources. The motive behind the attack remains under investigation.

Heightened Security Measures

This incident occurred just a day before President Donald Trump’s scheduled visit to Madison Square Garden for Game 3 of the NBA finals. In response, authorities have implemented enhanced security measures, including extra deployments, increased monitoring of surveillance cameras, and the use of drones to ensure safety in the area.

Penn Station, located directly beneath Madison Square Garden, serves as a crucial hub for city subway trains and passenger rail services to New Jersey and Long Island. It also houses the city’s Amtrak station, which reported no disruption to its services following the incident.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed his concern for the victims and gratitude towards the Amtrak Police Department and first responders for their swift action. “My heart is with everyone who was injured, their loved ones, and all those shaken by this unacceptable violence. I’m wishing each of the victims a full and speedy recovery,” Mamdani stated.

The New York Knicks are set to host the San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden, marking the first NBA finals game at the venue since 1999. With the elevated threat environment, officials are taking a proactive approach to ensure the safety of attendees and participants.
