NYC Mayor Mamdani Advocates for Abolishing ICE Amid Democratic Concerns

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has reiterated his call to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a stance that has raised concerns within the Democratic Party. During an interview on MS NOW’s “The Weekend,” Mamdani discussed ongoing protests at the ICE facility known as Delaney Hall in Newark, New Jersey, and highlighted the conditions there as a driving force behind his position.

Mamdani’s Vision for Immigration Enforcement

Mamdani stated, “This is partially why I have put forward a vision alongside so many others to say that ICE should be abolished, that there is no way to reform this kind of cruelty that we’re seeing endemic in the way that immigration is being enforced across the country.” He emphasized New York City’s commitment to sanctuary city policies and ensuring compliance across all city agencies.

When asked about the potential political fallout of the “Abolish ICE” slogan, Mamdani responded, “I think we’ve listened to them before, and look where we are. I think it’s time to develop a new vision for this party, one that is unflinching in its beliefs and also uncompromising in its principles.”

Reaching Beyond Party Lines

To reach beyond party lines, Mamdani emphasized the importance of delivering tangible results, citing initiatives like free child care as examples of what his administration aims to achieve. “There’s a lot of talk about the debate and what we have an opportunity to do here in New York City is to deliver on that vision,” he said.

Mamdani has been a vocal critic of ICE enforcement, particularly under the Trump administration, and has taken steps to limit cooperation between local law enforcement and ICE without a judicial warrant. He has described ICE as a “rogue agency” and has issued executive orders to prevent local collaboration with ICE in immigration enforcement.
