Ukraine Drone Attacks Target Russian Naval Base Near St. Petersburg

In a significant escalation, Ukraine has launched drone attacks on Russian military facilities near St. Petersburg, including a naval base in Kronstadt. This comes as the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, often referred to as ‘Putin’s Davos,’ concludes.

Drone Strikes and Their Impact

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that drones traveled approximately 1,000 kilometers to reach their targets, striking naval arsenals and causing fires at an oil depot in the Krasnodar region. The attack on the oil depot, a critical hub for Russian military fuel supplies, resulted in large fires, with at least three petroleum tanks engulfed in flames.

Russian authorities reported that 141 drones were intercepted over the Leningrad region, with debris scattered across several areas. Efforts to extinguish fires in Bolshaya Izhora, where over 600 people were evacuated, continue.

Responses and Reactions

The governor of St. Petersburg, Aleksandr Beglov, urged residents to stay indoors due to potential disruptions in mobile internet services. Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces claimed success in reaching their targets at the Kronstadt naval base, a key site for the Russian Baltic Fleet.

As both nations continue to engage in drone warfare, the frequency and effectiveness of Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy and military infrastructure have increased. The Ukrainian military reported that Russia launched 272 drones overnight, with 249 intercepted, affecting 11 locations.

These developments highlight the ongoing tensions and the strategic importance of drone technology in modern warfare, as Ukraine seeks to disrupt Russian military operations and supply lines.
