Frank Maldonado: A Legacy of Boxing and Community in San Francisco

Frank Maldonado, a revered figure in San Francisco’s Excelsior neighborhood, has dedicated decades to shaping young lives through boxing. At 85, Maldonado reflects on his journey that began in the 1980s when he transformed his garage into a boxing gym. This space became a haven for local youth, offering them not just boxing skills but life lessons in discipline and perseverance.

A Community Cornerstone

Maldonado’s gym, affectionately known as Frank’s, was a bustling hub where kids would gather after school. The gym’s walls are adorned with photographs, newspaper clippings, and memorabilia, each telling a story of the many young men who trained there. Among them were Golden Gloves champions, including his son Roman Maldonado and Omar Barefield, whose successes were celebrated citywide.

In recognition of his contributions, then-Mayor Willie Brown declared November 2, 2002, as Frank Maldonado Day in San Francisco. The proclamation highlighted Maldonado’s role in teaching not only boxing skills but also instilling values of hard work and dedication.

Enduring Impact

Alumni of Maldonado’s gym have gone on to diverse paths, carrying with them the lessons learned under his guidance. Ian Seth Steward, a former staff sergeant and now a criminal law teacher, credits Maldonado with preparing him for challenges faced during his military service. Another trainee, Pat Lawlor, became known as ‘the pride of the Sunset’ for his boxing prowess.

Though the gym is quieter now, Maldonado’s legacy endures. He occasionally revisits the familiar stance and throws punches into the air, a testament to his enduring passion for the sport. His story is one of community, resilience, and the profound impact one individual can have on the lives of many.
