Wisconsin’s Cole Caufield Honored with NHL’s Lady Byng Trophy

Cole Caufield, a proud native of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, and former University of Wisconsin Badgers hockey standout, has added another prestigious accolade to his collection by winning the NHL’s Lady Byng Trophy. This award is given to players who exemplify sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct while excelling on the ice, and Caufield’s achievement marks the first time a Badger has received this honor.

During the regular season, Caufield scored an impressive 51 goals, setting a new benchmark for Badgers in the NHL and becoming only the second player in school history to reach the 50-goal milestone in a single season. His disciplined play was evident as he incurred just seven minor penalties, the fewest among the league’s top 25 scorers.

Caufield’s performance was instrumental in helping the Montreal Canadiens advance to the Eastern Conference Final, where they were ultimately defeated by K’Andre Miller’s Carolina Hurricanes. Despite falling just two goals short of the Maurice ‘Rocket’ Richard Trophy, which is awarded to the NHL’s top goal-scorer, Caufield’s achievement is notable as he did not score any goals into an empty net.

The Lady Byng Trophy was awarded to Caufield over fellow finalists Anze Kopitar of the Los Angeles Kings and Jake Sanderson of the Ottawa Senators. This recognition adds to the rich history of Wisconsin alumni excelling in the NHL, a tradition that began when Gary Suter won the Calder Trophy as Rookie of the Year in 1986.

Wisconsin’s Legacy in the NHL

Wisconsin alumni have a storied history of winning major NHL awards. In addition to Caufield’s recent triumph, Badgers have claimed the Calder Trophy for Rookie of the Year, the Norris Trophy for Best Defenseman, the Vezina Trophy for Best Goaltender, the Bill Masterton Trophy for Perseverance, the King Clancy Trophy for Community Contribution, and the William Jennings Trophy for the lowest goals-against average. They have also been recognized with the Lester Patrick Award for contributions to hockey in the United States.

Cole Caufield’s Lady Byng Trophy win is a testament to the strong tradition of excellence and sportsmanship that Wisconsin alumni bring to the NHL, further cementing the state’s reputation as a breeding ground for hockey talent.
