Auburn University faced a tough challenge as they were narrowly defeated by Ole Miss 6-4 in the opening game of the Super Regional baseball series at Plainsman Park. The game drew a record crowd of 10,627 fans, all eager to see Auburn take on their rivals.
Game Highlights
Ole Miss took an early lead with a two-out RBI single by Brayden Randle in the second inning. Auburn had a chance to respond in the bottom of the second but was thwarted by a double play. In the third inning, Auburn’s Bristol Carter scored on a sacrifice fly by Fralick to tie the game at 1-1.
Ole Miss regained the lead in the fourth inning with another RBI from Randle, followed by a two-run homer by Judd Utermark, extending their lead to 4-1. Auburn fought back in the fifth inning with an RBI single from Chris Rembert, closing the gap to 4-2.
Despite a strong performance by Auburn’s pitcher Alvarez, who struck out 10 batters, Ole Miss extended their lead to 6-2 with a two-run home run by Collin Reuter. Auburn’s Mason McCraine hit a home run in the ninth inning, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit.
Looking Ahead
Auburn coach Butch Thompson expressed confidence in his team, stating, “I really felt like we had a chance to get back in that ballgame all the way up to the last batter at the plate.” Auburn will need a victory in the next game to force a decisive game three in the series.
The next game is scheduled for Saturday at 4 p.m. CT, where Auburn will aim to even the series and keep their hopes alive for advancing in the tournament.
