Eagle Lake Residents Rally to Preserve Historic School Building

In Eagle Lake, Florida, a dedicated group of residents is striving to preserve a piece of their community’s history. The old Eagle Lake Elementary School, a building that has stood since 1926, faces the threat of demolition as the city plans to develop a new city hall complex on its site. However, the city council has granted a 60-day grace period, allowing residents to seek grants or funds to save the building.

Community Efforts to Save a Landmark

Stephanie and David Floyd, long-time residents of Eagle Lake, are leading the charge to preserve the historic schoolhouse. ‘It represents generations,’ Stephanie Floyd remarked, emphasizing the building’s significance to the community. The Floyds are working to establish a historical society dedicated to this cause and have already received information on potential grants and contractors who specialize in restoring historical structures.

The old school is the last remaining historical structure in Eagle Lake, making its preservation a priority for those who cherish the town’s heritage. The Floyds acknowledge that if the building is beyond repair, they will accept its fate, but they are determined to exhaust all options before conceding.

City’s Perspective on Development

On the other side of the debate, Eagle Lake Mayor and Seat 4 Commissioner Corey Coler explained the city’s position. The city has experienced significant growth, necessitating expanded services for the community. The proposed city hall complex is intended to meet these needs, but repairing and modernizing the old school could cost up to $6 million, a financial burden the city is keen to avoid.

‘It’s not that we have a disdain for the building,’ Coler stated, ‘but we have other plans for the space.’ The city aims to make fiscally responsible decisions, considering the additional construction costs that could arise from altering current plans.

Looking Ahead

As the 60-day period progresses, the residents of Eagle Lake are hopeful that their efforts will yield the necessary support to preserve their town’s history. The outcome remains uncertain, but the community’s commitment to honoring its past is clear.
