Senate Approves $70 Billion for ICE and Border Patrol, Awaits House Vote

The U.S. Senate has successfully passed a $70 billion funding bill aimed at bolstering immigration enforcement through Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the U.S. Border Patrol. The bill, which passed with a 52-47 vote, now awaits consideration by the House of Representatives.

This legislation, which funds these agencies through 2029, comes after a lengthy 18-hour voting session. Notably, every Republican senator except Lisa Murkowski of Alaska supported the bill, highlighting the party’s commitment to addressing immigration enforcement.

House Vote Pending

Despite the Senate’s approval, the House of Representatives adjourned for the weekend, delaying any potential vote until Monday evening at the earliest. This delay comes after the bill faced several hurdles, including internal Republican disagreements over certain provisions that were eventually removed.

Initially, the bill included a $1 billion allocation for the Secret Service to fund security upgrades at the East Wing Modernization Project. However, this provision was removed following objections from multiple Republican senators. Additionally, a proposed $1.77 billion ‘Anti-Weaponization Fund’ under the Department of Justice, intended to support individuals claiming political targeting by the previous administration, was also a point of contention.

Controversy and Compromise

The Anti-Weaponization Fund, sourced from a settlement between former President Trump and the IRS, faced significant opposition. Republican senators from vulnerable states demanded an amendment to nullify the fund, leading to a deadlock. A temporary restraining order from a federal judge eventually led the Department of Justice to abandon the fund, allowing the bill to move forward.

While the Senate has resolved its differences, there remains a possibility that similar amendments could be proposed in the House, potentially sending the bill back to the Senate and causing further delays. This legislative back-and-forth has also impacted other critical bills, including those addressing housing, farm support, and infrastructure, as the midterm elections approach.
