Police say a dispute that began inside the Fall Family Festival at Kit Land Nelson Park escalated into gunfire around 10 p.m. Friday, critically injuring a 21‑year‑old man as attendees left the event. The shooting occurred near the intersection of Goodrich Avenue and East Orange Street, just off South Forest Avenue between First Street and Orange Street.
According to WESH, the victim was shot multiple times, including a gunshot wound to the head and several leg injuries, and was transported to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition. “Our thoughts are with the victim and his family,” the Apopka Police Department said in a statement.
Law enforcement arrested two juveniles in connection with the incident. A 17‑year‑old was charged with attempted first‑degree homicide, tampering with evidence, juvenile possession of a firearm, and resisting an officer without violence. A second minor was charged with resisting an officer without violence. Both suspects remain in custody.
Neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots and seeing shell casings on the ground. One resident, who asked to remain anonymous, called 911 and said, “We started praying for him. I noticed a gunshot wound to his head, multiple in the leg.” The neighbor added, “I can tell these young kids the message, put the guns down, go to church, leave it alone.”
Festival regular Eduardo Martinez told WESH that he and his family often attend the event but were not present during the shooting. “It’s amazing, you know, going to all the rides, eating all the delicious food here,” he said, before describing the incident as “crazy” and “tragic” for the community.
The Apopka Police Department emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and urged anyone with information or video footage to contact the department or CrimeLine at 1‑800‑423‑TIPS (8477).
What’s next: Authorities will continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the altercation and the firearm used. The district attorney’s office will review the juvenile charges, and community leaders are expected to address safety concerns at future festivals. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any relevant information to aid the investigation.
